Is Wineskin Safe For Mac

Wineskin is a tool used to make ports of Windows software to Mac OS X. The ports are in the form of normal Mac application bundle wrappers. It works like a wrapper around the Windows software, and you can share just the wrappers if you choose. If you were previously using the Wineskin or Cider clients for Mac, you will have to delete 'City of Heroes.app' and 'CoH.app' from your Applications folder in order to use the private Wine installation. Otherwise Island Rum will ignore it and launch one of the above. Copy the original BG1 and BG2 folders from inside your Wineskin wrapper to a safe place (just in case you need to start over). Then delete the BG1 and BG2 folders that are within the Wineskin wrapper. Copy the modified BG1 and BG2 folders from your bootcamp partition into the Wineskin wrapper. With the Wineskin method, you can play it on Mac without buying Windows or doing the partition on Mac. The Wineskin wrapper is quite stable to play, and the entire set-up gets done within an hour. It tricks the Skyrim into believing that we’re in a Windows environment. Other than Wineskin wrapper, the Cider wrapper of Skyrim can also be used. UPDATE: it has been revised to work between macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) and macOS 10.14 (Mojave). If you are also have the gog.com version read this other tutorial instead GOG Deus Ex Wineskin Tutorial

SAD NOTE: Due to apple dropping support for 32 Bit with the release of macOS 10.15 (Catalina) onwards it will no longer work!

Okay first things first - the actual reason for me writing this 'How to' was to find a native way of playing Deus Ex 1 (2000 version) on Mac OS X rather than via something like bootcamp and a windows installation. The only version ever released for the Apple Mac was natively Mac OS 9 which as we all know is now long gone. Plus this is the important bit it's still the number one game for me of all time!

So for this tutorial I am going to show the basic steps of installing Deus Ex and an example of a module called 'New Vision' which adds higher detailed textures, but I suppose any other modules would work the same way with the same procedure.

So here is what I used for this...

  1. For this 'How to' I am using Deus Ex (Game of the Year / GOTY) - Sold Out Software CD, which should cost only a few quid.
  2. Wineskin 2.6.2 which can be downloaded for free here.
  3. For this example 'New Vision 1.5' used to add better enhanced textures here.
  4. The Kenzie Deus Exe Launcher from here. Make sure to download the older version DeusExe-v5.3.zip.

Step 1:

Install Deus Ex with Wineskin

So lets get started by launching 'Wineskin Winery' and make sure to choose 'WS9WineCX15.3.1' engine (This is also VERY important if you want it to work) then press 'Create New Blank Wrapper'.

If 'WS9WineCX15.3.1' doesn't appear on your list press the '+' and 'Download and Install'.

After pressing 'Create New Blank Wrapper,' name the file 'Deus Ex'.

Then just leave it to install the relevant files until the window appears telling you 'View wrapper in Finder'.

This will take you to the newly created file. Press on the icon + ctrl key to show the dropdown and then select 'Show Package Contents'. At the same time you can quit the 'Wineskin Winery' app since you won't need this anymore.

In the new window launch 'Wineskin'. NOTE: The alias for drive_c is in the same folder as the Wineskin app which is the easier way of doing some of the amends during this 'How to'.

Select the 'Advanced' option.

Now select 'Options' next to 'Tools' on the right. This will take you to another window and choose 'Modify Mappings'.

This again will take you to another window simply delete any text in the My Documents field and then press 'Save'.

Mac

Now back on the previous window select the 'Set Screen Options'.

By default the 'Automatic' should be checked but if not select it. Then move the 'Extra Gamma Correction' bar to the 'Very Bright' - your screen will go lighter for a few seconds but then go back to normal. Now make sure to uncheck the 'Auto Detect GPU Info for Direct3D' because it stopped it working in MAC OS 10.13. Once finished press the 'Done' button.

This is another part of the fix to make it work in MAC OS 10.13. Choose the 'Tools' tab then the 'Wineskin' button.

Then on the screen search for 'vid' and from the results expand 'settings' and checkbox 'videomemorysize=2048' and press run. This will run the winertrick - once done just press 'close'.

Now press the 'Install Software' button.

On the next screen press 'Choose Setup Executable'.

Insert the 'Deus Ex GOTY' CD and choose the 'Setup.exe' file.

HowWineskin

All the next few windows should be straight forward so choose your language which for me is 'English International' - Also make sure that is says Version 1112F. Then press the 'Next' button.

Choose the 'I Agree'.

Then 'Next' - for this Deus Ex Sold Out software CD version it puts the files in 'C:DeusEx' directory but for other versions it may use a different directory but that's not important it will still work.

Make sure all the checkboxes are selected then again choose 'Next' and...

... then 'Install' and now just sitback and wait for the files to be installed.

Once installed you will see this screen just click 'Finish'.

A new Wineskin window should appear showing the DeusEx.exe file which needs to boot up automatically just select 'OK'.

!!! IF USING THE CD INSTALLER: Don't try to start it yet or you will get either an error screen or the game just won't boot. !!!

Now unzip the downloaded DeusExe-v5.3.zip file and drag the 4 files below into the folder 'drive_c/DeusEx/System/' - NOTE: the 'deusex.exe' file will replace the older version but that's fine. You should also be able to eject the 'Deus Ex GOTY' installer CD with no issues when running the game.

Now before you install the 'New Vision' module you will need to run the Deus Ex game first so press 'Test Run' in 'Wineskin'.

Your screen will go brighter and the 'kentie.net Deus Exe Launcher' should appear. It may take a while when first launching so be patient. Select the 'Configure' button.

On the new window select the following options which may differ mainly on your monitor size but for this example I am using the following:

  • Renderer: OpenGL Support (without this set the New Vision textures won't work/appear).
  • Resolution - Common: Choose your screen resolution, so for my example it's 1440x900.
  • Resolution – Fullscreen: Checked.
  • Quality: 32 bit color.
  • Field of view: 16:10 - this should have automatically changed so no need to select anything.

Now press 'OK' which takes you to the previous window and choose 'Play'. This will take you to Deus Ex game menu and so to be safe start a game and load the first level. Once done exit the game via the games built in menu. A popup will appear in 'Wineskin' - again ignore it and just press 'Cancel'.

Step 2:

Install the 'New Vision' Module

Back in the Wineskin app choose 'Install Software'.

Then 'Choose Setup Executable' again.

Now select the 'New_Vision_v1-5.exe' which you downloaded - Before installing I should warn you it will add another 3GB of harddrive space but these days is that such a big deal! Now press 'Next'.

The screen which will give you a rundown of what you are installing so just press 'Next'.

Now by default the first 2 checkboxes should be selected, both 'New Vision Files' and 'OpenGL Renderer (The OpenGL Renderer is an update to work on more modern graphics cards)'. This is fine and you don't need to select any others so just press the 'Next' button.

NOTE: If you are wondering why we installed Kentie's launcher earlier rather than here, it's because this version won't run on Mac OS X.

The new window will show the directory as 'c:DeusEx' - again just press the 'Next' button.

It will install all the files which will take some time but once done you will see the finished screen. Just press 'Finish'.

Now in order for the 'New Vision' to work we need to edit a file. Open the following 'drive_c/users/Wineskin/My Documents/Deus Ex/System/DeusEx.ini' file. Search for and change the following.

Insert and extra line of code so it looks like this...

Step 3:

To change the Games Icon (Optional)

Lets make it look better and give it an icon. So again in 'Wineskin' select 'Configuration' and choose the icon browse button and load up a file which can be as big as 512px x 512px and in icns file format. There are plenty on the web.

So it now should appear like this...

Step 4:

Start the game with high-res textures

Now quit 'Wineskin' and run the Deus Ex game with the new icon. When the 'kentie.net Deus Exe Launcher' appears press 'Data Directories'.

NOTE: This only needs to be done once NOT everytime it starts.

On the next screen checkbox both 'New Vision Maps' and 'New Vision Textures'. Now press the 'OK' button. NOTE: If the game plays slow on your machine try unchecking these and then maybe try changing your screen size, plus if you install any other modules they will probably have to be activated here in order to work.

Is Wineskin Safe For Mac Os

And finally you can press the 'Play' button and start a new game. You should now be able to see the high-res textures working. The levels will take longer to load due to the new high-res textures.

Here are a few game screenshots.

To conclude - I know this has been an epic of 'How to's' and someone else may know an easier/shorter way but I hope it helps someone! Maybe the actual company who made the game in the first place would give us a native version of 'Deus Ex 1' with new graphics and render engine (Yes I have played Deus Ex 3!)... it's good to dream!

Is Wineskin Safe For Mac High Sierra

I have also tested it with the following mods and it works fine, but they are NOT used in this tutorial.

  1. Zodiac MOD - Single player missions. Read how to install it hereNOTE: You will need to follow the instructions on this post first.
  2. Redsun 2020 MOD - Single player missions. NOTE: Doesn't work with New Vision MOD.here
  3. The Nameless MOD - Single player missions. here
  4. Project HDTP MOD - High-res Characters (Slow moving MOD on the development front) plus not all the characters are included. here

Wineskin App

in Community Support
Hello all,
I've successfully installed CC3 on my Mac OS 10.8.2 system using the following technique:
1. Download and install XQuartz.
http://xquartz.macosforge.org/landing/
2. Download and install Wineskin Winery
http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php
3. Open Wineskin Winery and configure a New Blank Wrapper
- add wine engine WS8Wine1.2.3
- add wine engine WS9Wine1.5.13 (or latest if newer version is available)
- highlight WS8Wine1.2.3 to use that engine for your CC3 wine install (we will change this after it is installed)
- choose Update under Wrapper Version to download the latest version
- click Create New Wrapper and save your wrapper as 'Campaign Cartographer 3.app'
4. Open the file Campaign Cartographer 3.app wine wrapper.
5. Choose Advanced to configure your installation with the following options
- Options > Force use of system installed XQuartz instead of using built in WineskinX11 (prevents Mission Control bug)
6. Click Install Software to install CC3 into this wrapper
- Choose Setup Executable
- browse to your downloaded CC3_Install.exe and open it
- you will walk through the CC3 installer process
- at the end of the process, do not check 'launch CC3 now'
7. Back at the Wineskin Advanced page, finalize the wrapper configuration
- Configuration > Windows EXE > Browse, find the fcw32.exe installed into your wine dos_device c drive. It will be nested inside Campaign Cartographer 3.app/drive_c/
- Tools > Change Engine Used > choose latest version, as of this document it was 1.5.13.
8. Choose Test Run
- CC3 should open.
9. Click around and go into Help. Wineskin will download and install the gecko framework to view html files inside CC3 (Help files)
I just got this up and running and will report any serious bugs and instructions to install Symbol Sets, Annuals, and expansions.

Excellent, thank you very much for posting your experience.

  • First, thank you sturtus for your excellent instructions. They've worked flawlessly for me for a while.
Today, though, I've been struggling to install the 2012 Annual . . . and consistently failing. The InstallAware program starts up well, but when I click on Next, instead of receiving the license page and a chance to input my serial number, I get External Exception 80000100, then a series of Access violation errors. I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar problems and, if so, how you've resolved them. I'll keep working at it myself, and if I succeed I'll post the steps that led to my success, but I'd definitely be interested in others' experiences.
  • I have found a workaround: I set Wine to use an earlier engine (1.3.?; I'm afraid I can't remember which exactly, but a little experimentation should do the trick). With that earlier engine chosen, I was able to run the InstallAware program for the 2012 Annual without difficulty. I then set Wine back to the current engine, and all is good!

Excellent tutorial. Works like a charm.
I am installing the full monty of CC3 products (CC3, DD3, CD3, CA3, Annual Vol. 1-7, SS1-4, Source Maps and TUM on Wine on a MacBook Pro 2011.
Like stated above by jbbb, you need to change the engine for all add-ons released 2011 and later. I used current version 1.7.4 for Annual Vol.5,6,7, as well as SS4.
Only issues encountered so far: broken menu icons (no problem) and all fonts on the example maps are messed up (probably due to system fonts, not available on Wine). All fonts are much bigger.
Please beware the Annual Vol. 2-4 have issues in the installer with the fonts. The installer still works, but the describing text is shown in Dingbats. I guess an engine in the middle range between 1.2.3 and 1.7.4 would fix that issue, but I haven't tried this.
I am still waiting for CA3 to download, and please note that the webdownloader version does not work on Wine. I am currently downloading the full versions ZIP (3GB) to see if that works. I will install it on the 1.7.4 engine and report back if I have any issues.
Performance is compared to bootcamp version much better. Loading time for sheet effects have doubled and mouse movement which was a struggle on the touchpad in bootcamp is not an issue in the WINE version. Even zooming from touchpad works.
Thx again for posting this tutorial. It saves me a complete bootcamp partition with Windows 7 (I used only for CC3).
EDIT: Can't get CA3 to work. Wine crashes on both 1.2.3 and 1.7.4. Will try to create a seperate wrapper with only CC3 and CA3.

  • Hi all.
Is this a better method than running CC3 (plus add-ons) in a virtual machine? Presently, I have CC3, DD3, CD3, SS1-4, and two annuals installed on Windows 8.1 on my rMBP running Yosemite and Parallels 10.
    Jamie
  • Not a better method, but if you prefer not to have a VM the solution is good.
I am currently trying to get it to work with CC3+, but visual C++ 12 is needed for the installer, and that doesn't work well with Wine. Anyone who has had success with installing CC3+ in a Wine wrapper?
  • 13 days later
  • Personally i use crossover for cc3 and cc3+ , i have found it to be the best of the bunch of wine engines and has a bunch of add ons to help with difficult installers

  • Everything ok with everyone? I haven't looked at this forum in over a year and my friend Steve mentions this post in the blog today. I need to get back into CC3 again. Photoshop has taken over so much of my work as I love to sketch by hand. However, CC3 saves a lot of time for mapping.

  • I seem to have been able to install CC3, two annuals and Cosmographer 3, and everything looks great except the add ons don't show up in the Add On menu? It's there, because I can load menus using the Menu... command, but just wondered why it's not recognizing what is installed?
  • edited November 2015
Make sure your installation is up to date with the latest update, then run CC3MenuConfig.exe in your CC3 installation directory. Note that running this file does not provide any feedback, you just have to repoen CC3 to check the results.
  • Have you reinstalled the latest update after you installed the add ons? You always run the latest updater even if it is installed as often needs to add extra files for the add ons. It may need to uninstall the update first, if so just reinstall it.

I tried running the latest CC3 update last, then the CCMenuConfig.exe. That gives me the a log with this error:
err:module:import_dll Library MSVBVM60.DLL (which is needed by L'C:Program FilesProFantasyCC3CC3MenuConfig.exe') not found
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L'C:Program FilesProFantasyCC3CC3MenuConfig.exe' failed, status c0000135
Looks like I need a library?
EDIT: Ran Winetricks vb6run. and reran CCMenuConfig.exe. No errors. Everything is perfect now. Thanks.

  • Here's how I solved the Visual C++ 12.0 error:
    (a) Start Wineskin from inside of the newly created Wine wrapper
    (b) Go to Tools, choose Winetricks
    (c) Press the Update Winetricks button
    (d) At the top type xml in the search, expand the dll group and put a check in msxml3, then click Run to install MS XML Core Services 3.0
    (e) At the top type vcrun in the search, expand the dll group and put a check in vcrun2013, then click Run to install Visual C++ 2013 libraries
    (f) Now install CC3+ using the guide posted at the top of the thread

I also found that on my El Capitan Mac that there was a black box that followed the hover mouseover tooltip. I was able to resolve this in the latest version of Wine Engine 1.9.21:
    1. Browse to 'Campaign Cartographer.app' and right click the file. Choose Show Package Contents
    2. Open Wineskin.app at the top of the package contents folder.
    3. Choose 'Advanced'
    4. Choose 'Set Screen Options'
    5. Check ON 'Use Mac Driver instead of X11' and 'Use Direct3D Boost (if available)' and click Done
    6. Check OFF Options > 'Force use of system installed XQuartz instead of using built in Wineskin X11' and 'Force use of wrappers quartz-wm for window decorations and not what is on the system'.
